1956: Babe Didrikson Zaharias, who became the first female golfer to play in a PGA Tour event during 1938's Los Angeles Open, dies of colon cancer at age 45 in Galveston, Texas. She won 10 LPGA majors in her career and is a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame. Zaharias was actually a latecomer to golf, having earlier in her life proven her abilities in track and field, basketball, baseball, softball, diving and bowling. She won two gold medals and one silver medal for track and field in the 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
