1994: More than 350 Republican congressional candidates sign the "Contract with America," a 10-point platform they pledge to enact if voters send a GOP majority to the U.S. House in November. The contract's co-author and architect, Rep. Newt Gingrich, then House minority whip, would become speaker of the House after the Republicans took control in the House. Gingrich is seen here in his official portrait, holding a copy of the Contract with America.
