1989: Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci, the first person in Olympic Games history to score a perfect 10 in gymnastics, which she did at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, escapes her homeland into Hungary. The five-time Olympic gold medalist, seen here in 1977, would eventually make her way to New York City and settle in the United States, becoming a naturalized American citizen in 2001.
