1895: Frank Duryea wins the Chicago Times-Herald race, the first gasoline-powered automobile race in the United States. The 54-mile race ran from Chicago's Jackson Park to Evanston, Illinois, with Duryea winning the $2,000 first prize in approximately 10 hours, averaging about 7.3 miles per hour.
