1944: Basketball Hall of Famer Earl Monroe, whose flamboyant dribbling, passing, and play-making earned him the nickname "Earl the Pearl," is born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Monroe won NBA Rookie of the Year in 1968 with the Baltimore Bullets and won an NBA championship in 1973 with the New York Knicks.
