2007: American astronaut Wally Schirra, one of the original Mercury Seven astronauts chosen for the Project Mercury, dies of a heart attack due to malignant mesothelioma at the age of 84 in La Jolla, California. Schirra, who was the fifth American to fly into space, is the only person to fly in all of America's first three space programs (Mercury, Gemini and Apollo) and logged a total of 295 hours and 15 minutes in space.
