2007: Evangelical fundamentalist Southern Baptist pastor Jerry Falwell, who became known for his sometimes controversial comments as a conservative political commentator, dies of cardiac arrhythmia at the age of 73 in Lynchburg, Virginia. He was the founding pastor of the Thomas Road Baptist Church, a megachurch in Lynchburg. He also founded Liberty University in 1971 and cofounded the Moral Majority in 1979.
