1848: German-American businessman John Jacob Astor, the first multi-millionaire in the United States, dies at the age of 84 in Manhattan, N.Y. Astor moved to the United States following the American Revolutionary War and built a fur-trading empire expanding across the country before diversifying into New York City real estate in the early 1800s. At the time of his death, he was the wealthiest person in the America, leaving an estate estimated to be worth at least $20 million.
