1987: Maria von Trapp, the Austrian-American singer who was the stepmother and matriarch of the Trapp Family Singers, dies of heart failure at age 82 in Morrisville, Vermont. Her story served as the inspiration for the Broadway musical "The Sound of Music" and the 1965 film adaptation, in which she was portrayed by Julie Andrews.
