1584: Tsar Ivan IV Vasilyevich, aka Ivan the Terrible, dies from a stroke at the age of 53 in Moscow, Russia. His long reign, beginning at the age of 16 in 1547, saw the conquest of the Kazan, Astrakhan and Siberia, transforming Russia into a multiethnic state spanning almost one billion acres.
