Vikings sack Paris, the Hollywood Walk of Fame gets its first star, President Eisenhower dies, and Three Mile Island melts down, all on this day.
1979: Emmett Kelly, the circus performer who created the memorable clown figure "Weary Willie" dies of a heart attack at age 80 in Sarasota, Florida. Kelly based the tragic character of Weary Willie off the hobos of the Depression era. From 1942 to 1956 he was a major attraction with the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus. He also served as the mascot for the Brooklyn Dodgers during the 1956 season and landed a number of Broadway and film roles, including the role of "Willie" in Cecil B. DeMille's "The Greatest Show on Earth."
