2002: Actor and comedian Milton Berle, who was known to millions of viewers as "Uncle Miltie" and "Mr. Television" during TV's golden age, dies of colon cancer at the age of 93 in Los Angeles, Calif. Berle, whose real name was Milton Berlinger, was the first major American television star, hosting NBC's "Texaco Star Theater" comedy-variety show from 1948 to 1955. He started out as a child actor in silent films and moved onto vaudeville, stand-up comedy and radio stardom in the 1920s and 1930s.
