1919: Actor Strother Martin, best known as the chain gang prison captain in the 1967 film "Cool Hand Luke," is born in Kokomo, Ind. Martin was also known for his roles in movies like "The Horse Soldiers," "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance," "The Wild Bunch," "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," "True Grit" and "Slap Shot." He died of a heart attack at age 61 on Aug. 1, 1980.
