1987: Actor Robert Preston, best remembered for originating the role of Harold Hill in the 1957 stage musical "The Music Man" and the subsequent film adaptation, dies of lung cancer at the age of 68 in Montecito, California. Preston also appeared in the movies "How the West Was Won," "Mame," "Victor Victoria," for which he earned an Academy Award nomination, and "The Last Starfighter."
