Napoleon returns to Paris, "Uncle Tom's Cabin" is published, the Republican Party is born, John and Yoko get hitched, and Janis Joplin hits No. 1 posthumously, all on this day.
1916: Albert Einstein's theory of general relativity, one of the two pillars of modern physics, is published as an academic paper titled "Die Grundlagen der allgemeinen Relativitästheorie" in the physics journal Annalen der Physik. This theory explains gravitation as distortion of the structure of spacetime by matter, affecting the inertial motion of other matter. It also accounted for the slow rotation of the elliptical path of the planet Mercury, which Newtonian gravitational theory failed to do.
