1943: Italian-American gangster Frank Nitti, one of Al Capone's top henchmen who took over Capone's Chicago crime syndicate after Capone was sent to prison in 1932 for income-tax evasion, dies from self-inflicted gunshot wounds to the head on an Illinois Central railroad branch line in North Riverside, Illinois. Nitti was scheduled to go before a grand jury on extortion charges the next day.
