The Tuskegee Airmen are activated, Elvis buys Graceland, Bob Dylan releases his debut album, Texas Western makes college basketball history, and the invasion of Iraq begins, all on this day.
2005: John DeLorean, the automobile engineer and executive best known for developing the Pontiac GTO muscle car, the Pontiac Firebird, Pontiac Grand Prix and the DeLorean DMC-12 sports car, dies from a stroke at the age of 80 in Summit, New Jersey. DeLorean had also made headlines for his high profile 1982 arrest on charges of drug trafficking. Prosecutors claimed that his alleged trafficking was an attempt to raise funds for his struggling DeLorean Motor Company, which declared bankruptcy that same year. He successfully defended himself against the charges, showing that his alleged involvement was a result of entrapment by federal agents.
