1845: John Chapman, better known as "Johnny Appleseed," dies in Fort Wayne, Indiana, at the age of 70. The environmentalist and pioneer became an American legend while he was still alive, introducing apple trees to large parts of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois.
