1910: The worst avalanche in United States history buries a Great Northern Railway train in the little town of Wellington, Washington, killing 96 people. The avalanche began just after 1 a.m. and hit the town's railroad depot, throwing the train cars 150 feet downhill and into the Tye River valley.
