1927: Actor and musician Harry Belafonte, dubbed the "King of Calypso" for popularizing the Caribbean musical style in the 1950s, is born in Harlem, New York. Belafonte, best known for singing "The Banana Boat Song," is also known for his advocacy for civil rights and humanitarian causes.
