1887: Painter Marc Chagall, one of the most successful artists of the 20th century and the last surviving master of European modernism, is born Moishe Shagal near the city of Vitebsk, Belarus, which was then part of the Russian Empire. Chagall is best known as a painter, but created works in virtually every artistic medium, including book illustrations, stained glass, stage sets, ceramics, tapestries and fine art prints. He died at the age of 97 on March 28, 1985.
