1961: Diana, Princess of Wales, is born Diana Spencer in Sandringham, Norfolk, England. She became famous with her engagement to Charles, Prince of Wales, and their July 29, 1981, wedding at St. Paul's Cathedral was seen by a global television audience of more than 750 million. She also received recognition for her charity work and for her support of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines. Even after she and Charles divorced in 1996, she remained a popular celebrity up until her death in a car crash in Paris on Aug. 31, 1997.
