2005: Writer and illustrator Will Eisner, best known for his comic book series "The Spirit," dies at age 87 in Lauderdale Lakes, Fla., of complications from a quadruple bypass surgery performed about two weeks earlier. One of the earliest cartoonists to work in the American comic book industry, the Eisner Award, given to recognize achievements each year in the comics industry, was named in his honor.
