1880: Comedian and actor W. C. Fields, known for his comic persona as a misanthropic and hard-drinking egotist, is born William Claude Dukenfield in Darby, Pennsylvania. He died of an alcohol-related stomach hemorrhage at age 66 on Christmas Day in 1946.
