1953: The Arthur Miller drama "The Crucible" opens at the Martin Beck Theatre on Broadway. Miller wrote the play, a dramatization of the Salem witch trials that took place in the Province of Massachusetts Bay during 1692 and 1693, as an allegory of McCarthyism.
