1967: The world's first "Be-In" takes place at Golden Gate Park's polo fields in San Francisco, attracting more than 25,000 people. Performers include Jefferson Airplane, The Grateful Dead, and Big Brother & The Holding Company. The counterculture event, held in response to a new California law banning the use of the psychedelic drug LSD, also saw Timothy Leary utter his famous phrase "Turn on, tune in, drop out" for the first time.
