1917: American frontiersman William "Buffalo Bill" Cody dies of kidney failure at the age of 70 in Denver, Colo. Cody, a soldier, buffalo hunter and showman, was one of the most colorful figures of the American Old West and became famous for the "Wild West" shows he organized with cowboy themes.
