1914: Author William S. Burroughs, a primary figure of the Beat Generation and a major postmodernist author best known for his novel "Naked Lunch," is born in St. Louis, Missouri. He died at age 83 on Aug. 2, 1997, from complications of a heart attack he had suffered the previous day.
