1963: Hall of Fame basketball player Charles Barkley, an 11-time All-Star who won the NBA MVP award in 1993, is born in Leeds, Alabama. Barkley totaled 23,757 points, 12,546 rebounds and 4,215 assists over a 16-season career with the Philadelphia 76ers, Phoenix Suns and Houston Rockets. In 1993, he led the Suns to the NBA Finals, where they lost to Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls in six games. He also won two Olympic gold medals in 1992 and 1996 as a member of the United States' Dream Team.
