1967: Physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, often called the "father of the atomic bomb" for his role in the Manhattan Project, the World War II project that developed the first nuclear weapons, dies at the age of 62 in Princeton, New Jersey, three days after falling into a coma. Oppenheimer had been diagnosed with throat cancer in 1965 and underwent unsuccessful radiation treatment and chemotherapy late in 1966.
