1818: Although the exact date of birth remains unknown, this is the day abolitionist Frederick Douglass chose to celebrate his birthday. Douglass was born a slave in Talbot County, Maryland, but escaped in 1838 and became a leader of the abolitionist movement, noted for his for his dazzling oratory skills and incisive antislavery writing.
