1919: Singer and actor Tennessee Ernie Ford, best remembered for his hit recording of "Sixteen Tons," is born in Bristol, Tenn. He also recorded the No. 1 country hits "Mule Train" and "The Shotgun Boogie" and hosted his own prime-time variety show in the 1960s. Ford died of liver failure at age 72 on Oct. 17, 1991.
