1977: Film director and writer Howard Hawks, best known for films such as "Bringing Up Baby," "His Girl Friday," "Sergeant York," "To Have and Have Not," "The Big Sleep," "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" and "Rio Bravo," dies at the age of 81 in Palm Springs, California, from complications of a fall several weeks earlier. He's seen here with Lauren Bacall in 1943.
