1954: Hall of Fame baseball player Ozzie Smith, a 13-time Gold Glove winner who set major league records for career assists (8,375) and double plays (1,590) by a shortstop, is born in Mobile, Alabama. Smith played 19 seasons in the MLB, mostly with the St. Louis Cardinals, winning a World Series in 1982.
