1959: Sprinter Florence Griffith Joyner, a five-time Olympic medalist, including three gold medals at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea, is born in Los Angeles. She died in her sleep as the result of an epileptic seizure at the age of 38 on Sept. 21, 1998.
