1923: Baseball Hall of Fame outfielder Larry Doby, who became the first black baseball player in the American League when he signed a contract with the Cleveland Indians in July 1947, is born in Camden, S.C. Doby's historic signing came just 11 weeks after Jackie Robinson had broken Major League Baseball's color barrier with the National League's Brooklyn Dodgers. A seven-time consecutive All-Star center fielder, Doby and teammate Satchel Paige became the first black players to win a World Series championship when the Indians won in 1948. Doby played with the Newark Eagles before joining the Indians and also served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Besides the Indians, he also played for the Chicago White Sox and Detroit Tigers in a 13-year MLB career before retiring in 1959. He died of cancer at the age of 79 on June 18, 2003.
