1962: Legendary DJ and promoter Alan Freed pleads guilty at his payola trial in New York City to receiving money from labels to play their records on the air. He was fined $300 and given six months probation. The controversy irreparably damaged his career and he died just over two years later at age 43 from uremia and cirrhosis brought on by alcoholism.
