1830: The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad's new Tom Thumb steam locomotive, the first American-built steam locomotive used on a common-carrier railroad, races a horse-drawn car. The locomotive led the race until a belt slipped off a pulley and the engine lost power. However, the demonstration proved successful, showing that the steam locomotive offered superior performance.
