1917: Comic book artist, writer and editor Jack Kirby, who had a hand in creating some of Marvel Comics' most iconic superhero characters, is born Jacob Kurtzberg in New York City. In 1940, he teamed up with writer-editor Joe Simon to create Captain America and then worked with Stan Lee in the 1960s to co-create several other major characters, including the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, the Hulk, Thor and Iron Man. He died of heart failure at age 76 on Feb. 6, 1994.
