1981: John W. Hinckley Jr. pleads not guilty to charges of attempting to kill President Ronald Reagan. Reagan suffered heavy internal bleeding and a punctured lung in the March 30, 1981, assassination attempt, but recovered quickly. Hinckley was eventually found not guilty by reason of insanity and has remained under institutional psychiatric care since.
