1942: American and Filipino forces surrender on the Bataan Peninsula after spending three months fighting Japanese forces that had invaded the Philippines. After the battle was over, more than 60,000 Filipino and 15,000 American prisoners of war were forced into the infamous Bataan Death March, a 80-mile march characterized by wide-ranging physical abuse and murder of thousands of POWs.
