1865: Gen. Robert E. Lee surrenders the Army of Northern Virginia to Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House, Va., effectively ending the Civil War. The signing of the surrender documents occurred in the parlor of a house owned by Wilmer McLean, seen here.
