1905: The first aerial ferry bridge in the United States goes into operation in Duluth, Minn. The bridge, which featured a gondola capable of transporting people and vehicles across a canal, was one of only two ever built in the U.S. It was upgraded in 1929-30 to a vertical lift bridge, with the central span rising up and down to let boats pass underneath, and continues to operate today.
