1999: In Laramie, Wyo., Russell Henderson pleads guilty to kidnapping and felony murder in the death of Matthew Shepard and agrees to testify against his friend and fellow suspect Aaron McKinney to avoid the death penalty. Both Henderson and McKinney would eventually be sentenced to two consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole. The murder of Shepard, a gay student at the University of Wyoming who was beaten, robbed and left tied to a wooden fence post outside of Laramie in October 1998, brought national and international attention to the contention of hate crime legislation at the state and federal levels.
