2013: Seventy-four people, including 18 children, are killed in the collapse of an illegal multistory building in Thane, India, a city in the Mumbai region. A total of 15 suspects were arrested in connection with the collapse, including builders, engineers, municipal officials and other responsible parties. The accident was one of several building collapses in Mumbai in 2013, including one in September that killed 61 people. Housing rights groups say many old buildings in the city are rundown and neglected, while newer ones are often built using substandard materials and have structural problems.
