OTD April 23 - Rhythm Club fire
29 / 42

1940: Fire breaks out at the Rhythm Club dance hall in Natchez, Mississippi, killing 209 people. Many victims died from smoke inhalation or by being crushed by the crowd trying to escape, with the club's windows boarded over and the back door padlocked. The fire is still listed as the second deadliest club fire in U.S. history after the Cocoanut Grove nightclub fire in Boston, Massachusetts, on Nov. 28, 1942, which killed 492 people.
