1791: James Buchanan, the 15th president of the United States from 1857 to 1861, is born in Cove Gap, Pennsylvania. Buchanan's inability to impose peace on a sharply divided country on the brink of the American Civil War has frequently landed him on historians' rankings as one of the worst U.S. presidents.
