1836: A day after the Battle of San Jacinto during the Texas Revolution, forces under Texas Gen. Sam Houston capture Mexican Gen. Antonio López de Santa Anna. While captive in Texas, Santa Anna signed a treaty recognizing the independence of Texas in exchange for his life and transport back to Mexico.
