2010: Daryl Gates, the former Los Angeles police chief credited with creating the anti-drug D.A.R.E. program, dies of bladder cancer at the age of 83 in Dana Point, Calif. Gates, also considered the father of SWAT teams, resigned from the Los Angeles Police Department in 1992 following the Rodney King beating and the riots afterward.
