1963: The U.S. Navy submarine USS Thresher sinks in the North Atlantic during deep-diving tests approximately 220 miles east of Boston, Massachusetts, killing all 129 on board. The Thresher was the first nuclear submarine lost at sea and remains today the world's worst submarine disaster.
